CSS in the 4th dimension: Not your daddy’s CSS animations

CSS2.1 was two dimensional: There was no concept of depth or time. CSS3 brings us some control over both, with transitions and animations for the latter. In this talk we will start from the basics of these specifications, but will quickly move to more advanced tips and tricks to fully leverage these exciting technologies. The talk will follow Lea’s trademark presentation style with live code examples, that has been praised by audiences all over Europe and the US.

Lea works as a Developer Advocate for W3C. She has a long-standing passion for open web standards, which she fulfills by researching new ways to use them, blogging, speaking, writing, and coding popular open source projects to help fellow developers. She is a member of the CSS Working Group, which architects the language itself. Lea studied Computer Science in Athens University of Economics and Business, where she co-organized and occasionally lectured a cutting edge Web development course for 4th year undergrads. She is one of the few misfits who love code and design equally.

Ο Βασίλης Σαλαπάτας είναι χημικός-μηχανικός και συνιδρυτής της μη κερδοσκοπικής εταιρείας SciFY. Έχει εργαστεί για περισσότερα από 25 χρόνια στη βιομηχανία, στους τομείς των πολυμερών, της συσκευασίας, των βιομηχανικών εκτυπώσεων και γραφικών τεχνών, των επιμεταλλώσεων, καθώς επίσης και σαν ελεύθερος επαγγελματίας με εμπορική δραστηριότητα. Ανακατεύεται με όλα, φανατικός καινοτομολάτρης, σκέφτεται ανάποδα.

Ο Βασίλης Γιαννακόπουλος είναι marketing professional και ενθουσιασμένος υπεύθυνος του τμήματος marketing της μη κερδοσκοπικής εταιρείας SciFY. Έχει εμπειρία σε θέματα marketing, διοίκησης ανθρώπινου δυναμικού και δημόσιας διοίκησης. Έχει εργαστεί στο χώρο της έρευνας αγοράς για μεγάλες ελληνικές και πολυεθνικές εταιρείες, στο marketing τηλεπικοινωνιών και στο δημόσιο, αλλά η δουλειά του με τη SciFY του δίνει ικανοποίηση, ενέργεια και ελπίδα.

Το Hackerspace [HSGR] είναι ένας ανοιχτός χώρος δημιουργικότητας, συνεργασίας, έρευνας, ανάπτυξης και φυσικά μάθησης. Είναι όμως και κάτι περισσότερο από ένας φυσικός χώρος. Είναι μια ενεργή κοινότητα ανθρώπων με ιδέες που πηγάζουν απ' τη φιλοσοφία του Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού.
Δύο χρόνια λειτουργίας κι 321 total events μετά, θέλουμε να σας παρουσιάσουμε μερικά από τα πράγματα που γίνονται στο hackerspace και να μοιραστούμε αυτό το δημιουργικό ταξίδι μαζί σας.

~okeanos and Synnefo: The public cloud service and the open source software that powers it

This talk will introduce Synnefo, a complete open source cloud platform. Synnefo powers GRNET's ~okeanos public cloud service, an IaaS cloud delivering advanced compute, network and storage services to the Greek research and academic community, since 2011.
The talk will cover our experiences with building and running a large-scale production public cloud, focusing on:

1. Open source vs. commercial software in building a large-scale, production cloud infrastructure
2. Building on commodity hardware vs. vendor solutions
3. Current open source solutions
4. Identifying the building blocks of an IaaS cloud, and re-using existing opensource components wherever possible
5. Why Synnefo?
6. General Synnefo architecture, software components used
7. Running robust, fault-tolerant VMs without a Storage Area Network
8. Using a content-addressable file storage service as the Image repository
9. Unified storage of files, VM Images and live VM disks, independently of the backend storage technology
10. Thin VM provisioning, with zero data copy and live VM migration
11. Current Industry and Open Source Community use cases of Synnefo
12. Production readiness/Scalability/Maintainability on commodity hardware

Vangelis Koukis received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece in 2002, and his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from NTUA in 2010. His research focused on the interaction between OS and architectures, scheduling for scalable clustered systems, high-performance cluster interconnection networks, and shared block-level storage. Currently, he is working with GRNET as the Technical Lead of the ~okeanos project. ~okeanos is GRNET’s Infrastructure-as-a-Service public cloud, providing cloud computing services to the Greek research and academic community since 2011. He is one of the core developers of Synnefo, the opensource software powering ~okeanos, and is responsible for coordinating the operation of the various development groups within Synnefo.
